In 1982, the Oakland Museum of California embarked on a major project—the creation of Cowell Hall’s California History Wing. The goal was to capture the rich and diverse history of California, and at the heart of this ambitious vision was a monumental mural that would set the tone for the entire exhibit. Among 300 artists from the San Francisco Bay Area, T. Christian Wolfe was selected for this prestigious commission, a testament to his artistic brilliance and deep understanding of California’s cultural heritage.

Wolfe’s mural, titled "In the Beginning," became the centerpiece of the wing, depicting a serene and evocative scene of a coastal Miwok Indian village, nestled beside a vibrant estuary. At 50 feet long, it was the largest painting ever displayed in the museum and symbolized the harmonious relationship between the indigenous people and the natural world that defined early California.

For over 25 years, "In the Beginning" greeted visitors as they entered the California History Wing, inspiring thousands each year with its detail, historical accuracy, and emotional depth. Wolfe’s ability to capture the essence of California’s early inhabitants and their environment made the mural an enduring favorite, transcending time and resonating with multiple generations of museum-goers.
